Each of my landscape tiles are multi-layered, design elements built on top of the previous layer, sometimes carved for additional detail and then painted with under-glazes. In some cases multiple firings are required. Making these tiles is a very slow process. The overall size and varying thickness of the clay slabs in addition to the under-glazing and final glazing can takes months to achieve. Size and thickness of the clay slabs also dictates whether or not the piece can be fired as a whole or needs to be cut into smaller pieces to withstand expansion and contraction in the firing and cooling process.
